Houston Texans Brief History
Born in 2002 as an expansion team, they are, as of 2019, the youngest NFL franchise. The city of Houston was a favorite to get the 32nd NFL team, competing against Los Angeles and Toronto. And, on October 6, 1999, the league decided to finally grant Houston the rights to get the new franchise, at a cost of $700 million.
The team is a replacement for the Oilers, a franchise that moved to Nashville, where they are now known as the Titans. The Texans struggled during its first years in the league and finally acquired some success in 2011. That was the year when they managed to clinch their first playoff berth, and also the year when they acquired their first division title. The team went on to win four more AFC South titles in 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2018. With that said, as of 2018, they remain the only franchise in the NFL to have not appeared in a conference title game.
Houston Texans Team Rivalries
According to many fans, the Titans, who used to be known as the Houston Oilers until the ’90s, is the top rival for this team. And they are direct rivals at the AFC South.
This franchise also holds an important rivalry with another AFC South team, the Colts. Indy is actually a team the Texans always had a hard time defeating. In fact, they were able to get a victory over the Colts until 2015. The bitterness between the two franchises has escalated recently due to Andrew Luck, a Houston native, picked by the Colts at the 2012 NFL draft.
This team also has an intra-estate/inter-conference rivalry with the Cowboys, with whom they play the Governor’s Cup every single year (this is a tradition that was born before the Oilers relocated).
