Best and worst of NBA’s summer league at Orlando and Las Vegas

John Wall is the new big man in the NBA, and we all know, that. He did fantastic at the recent summer league games of the Wizards at Las Vegas, averaging 23 points and 7 assists per match (4), and he was even able to watch Washington’s fifth match sit comfortably on the bench, as it seemed like coach Flip Saunders saw enough of Wall’s potential, and now he is well aware of what the new superstar is capable of.

But not all rookies whom are coming out of the past draft did great in their first games with their NBA teams, so, let’s check who else did good and who did not so much.

While Wall was able to meet expectations, Evan Turner couldn’t, as the second overall pick of the past draft finish with a poor average of 9 points, 2 assists and 3 turnovers per match. He was never able to score more than 13 points in any of the matches from the 76ers at Orlando, though the only positive aspect from his game were the rebounds, so it was not all bad, but in general, he was the big disappointment of the summer league.

DeMarcus Cousins, just as Wall, was able to take on coaching instructions pretty well, and that is a very positive aspect for a rookie. After these preparatory games, the Kings should be happy with choosing Cousins with their fifth overall pick, as the young player certainly show maturity, and was in command of double teams. He was also outstanding at the midrange shot.

The Nets were not very successful at attaining the services of free agents, and it seems like things continue to go bad for them concerning Derrick Favors, their third overall pick at the past draft, as the 19 year old power forward finished with a bad record, though I believe it was mostly because New Jersey gave more minutes to Terrence Williams, which is why the full talents of Favors at the league are still to be tested.

Another winner in the draft was the Raptors, whom chose Ed Davis with their 13th overall pick. He is a 21 year power forward that seemed like a younger version of Chris Bosh during Toronto’s matches at Las Vegas.

Well, these are just training games, but thanks to them, we now see what we might expect from some of the top rookies in the league.
