Belmont Stakes: not as interesting as in previous editions

This year there will not be Triple Crown champion, as no horse managed to won the two previous competitions of this important yearly event. In fact, nether Super Saver, the winner of the Kentucky Derby or Lookin at Lucky will be present at the starting gate of the 142nd edition of the Belmont Stakes today.

The two horses that came up victorious at the first two legs of the most awaited event in horse racing, the Triple Crown, are getting some deserve rest for a 2nd season campaign that will start in August and might end up in November with the Breeders’ Cup.

And certainly, nobody can deny that the absence of these two outstanding colts has taken out some of the attractive attached to the Crown, as the Belmont Stakes has always been the last stop for horses that won the previous two legs, or at least one, but this year, that essential element of the competition is not going to be present.

And since the interest on the race has decreased, the crowd present at the racetrack today is certainly not going to be as big as in past editions, but it will still be quite attractive for at least two core clients of the Belmont: horse bettors (this 1 ½ mile race is quite a lucrative one) and of course, New Yorkers.

Bob Baffert, a hall of famer trainer that is behind 10-1 Game on Dude, mentioned that this year’s edition of the race will be wide open, with all the horses within 5 miles of each other. Nick Zito, another half of famer, will be sending two of his top horses to the competition in 9-2 Fly Down, and favorite 3-1 Ice Box.

An interesting aspect of this edition of the Belmont Stakes is that the music that is heard when the colts step into the racing tracks is going to change from an old classic, to a more modern beat, as Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” was replaced by “Empire State of Mind’ a song by famous rapper Jay-Z.

The change has come because Jay-Z’s tune has turned out into an essential anthem for the city of New York, and the song that will be actually performed is a version from Alicia Keys that will be performed by Jasmine Villegas, a teenage recording artist.
