A view into the battle between cornerbacks at the Patriots

The Patriots did not shown a very solid defense last year, and it is quite clear that they need to improve this time around, which is why they re-signed Leigh Bodden to a 4-year contract that is worth $22 million dollars as he performed quite well last season, ending with five interceptions and seventeen pass deflections. He has also solidified as the Patriots’ number one cornerback in despite of a few minor flaws, that prevents him from being an all-around player in that position.

But behind him, there is a group of young cornerbacks whom are competing for a starting position, and here we will check out who they are.

Darius Butler: He might not be the best number two CB in the league, but he certainly fills that position outstandingly in the Pats, as he has come up with more pass break ups and interceptions than Jonathan Wilhite in less time. Last year he finished with 3 interceptions, one touchdown and 8 passes.

Devin McCourty: This is a player that will be competing for time as a proficient kick returner and is also regarded as a top contributor when it comes to special teams. He was drafted in the past draft, and is expected to meet the team’s expectations as he was considered the top cornerback in the Big East conference by a good number of receivers.

Jonathan Wilhite: Although he shown some flashes of greatness last season, he finished with only 2 interceptions and 5 passes defensed, which is why he needs to become more effective this year if he wants to become of the top cornerbacks in New England.

Terrence Wheatley: He could have become one of the top cornerbacks in the league, as he had a fabulous sophomore year, but an early injury on his NFL career prevented him from doing it. He is expected to contribute with the team this upcoming season, but not a desired high level.

Kyle Arrington: He’s been a favorite of Coach Bill Belichick due to his good work on special teams, but it is almost certain that Wheatley will be replacing him as the special teamer this year.

Terrence Johnson: From all the players on this list, this is the one that will have to play the hardest in order to make it from the practice squad to the starting lineup.
