Some of the worst draft decisions in NBA history

The 2010 NBA draft is going to take place on July 24 at the Garden, and now it seems like a great moment to review some of the worst picks since the league began utilizing the lottery selection system back in 1985.

Let’s start with Nikoloz Tskitishvili, who was chosen by the Nuggets as the fifth overall before players such as Amare Stoudemire and Caron Butler, whom would have certainly being better picks than an Italian that only averaged 3 points per game.

Back at the 1995 draft, the Warriors also made a mistake when they opted for signing Joe Smith instead of going for Kevin Garnett, one of today’s superstars and a future hall of fame inductee. If they would be given a new choice, they probably won’t hesitate on taking KG over Smith.

Even though he was a fantastic blocker, Shawn Bradley was terrible concerning offensive, and the Sixers picked this 7’6 player over more complete ones such Anfernee Hardaway and Jamal Mashburn, both whom went on to have outstanding careers at the league.

At the 1996 draft, the Sixers actually picked a great player in Allen Iverson, but teams like the Raptors and the Grizzlies certain made a huge mistake with the respective choices, as they pass on Kobe Bryant, a player that ended up being drafted as the 13th overall by the Hornets, whom immediately transferred the superstar to the Lakers, where he has played since.

How about the 1987 draft? Well, at this time, the Clippers opted for Reggie Williams, a player that ended up scoring only ten points per game, instead of going for Scottie Pippen, one of the most influential players in NBA history. Sadly for the Clips, this was not the first time they screwed their draft, and it would surely not be their last one.

The Wizards thought they had chosen well back in 2001 when they decided to pick Kwame Brown, a player that failed to meet expectations in a team that was pressured to obtain some good results under Michael Jordan’s command, but he ended up scoring only 4 points per game. This draft also featured Pau Gasol, who was chosen as the 3rd overall, and who would have been an excellent choice for Washington.

In 2 months, we will find out who will choose right, and who will feel sorry for their draft choices.
