Blackhawks win Stanley Cup after 49-year drought

After 49 years without a title, the Blackhawks were finally able of conquering a title as they won the Stanley Cup last night in game six by 4-3 in overtime after defeating the Flyers in a series that ended 4-2. And for a few seconds at the end of the game, it seemed like only Patrick Kane, the scorer of the last goal for the current champs knew what they had achieved.

After the puck past Michael Leighton (who stopped an impressive 37 shots, except the one that mattered the most), he immediately approached his teammates and let them knew that they should save some energy in order to party later as the cup was theirs.

Jonathan Toews ended up receiving the Conn Smythe Trophy for MVP of the playoffs. He was one of the few who immediately knew they were the champs and celebrated by throwing his gloves in the air, and then headed to Chicago’s end of the hockey ice rink in order to celebrate with goaltender Antti Niemi, who was not tested too much during the whole game.

Toews was also the one to first hold the cup, as he took of the hands of Commissioner Gary Bettman, and the next one was Marian Hossa, who had tried to conquer a championship with the Red Wings and the Penguins.

Kane was just ecstatic, as he said that to win the Stanley Cup is probably one of the biggest feelings a hockey player can ever feel. Now he knows what was in the minds of Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull, two of the players that made up the team that got the cup for Chicago 49 years ago. With this achievement, the Blackhawks are actually ending up with a non-wanted record: the longest active period without titles by an NHL team.

The defeat for the Flyers just added to their already tragic number of failures at Stanley Cup finals appearance, as this meant their sixth disappointment at the most important series of games in ice hockey.

The Blackhawks will be returning to Chicago in order to celebrate the conquering of the cup with their fans, and when it comes to its historical importance, we can expect this to be a non-stop party that can actually last not just for a few hours but for various days.
